Serving Refugees

Recently, I was thinking about how I could serve and show love to the Afghan refugees.  I knew that tables and chairs were an item needed as they were settled into new apartments, but in short supply.  Occasionally, tables and chairs end up on our neighborhood Facebook page, so I would look at the page from time to time.  One day I saw a post from a lady looking to give away their kitchen table and chairs to a family in need.  I contacted her, briefly explained the situation and set up a time to pick them up.  When we picked them up, I took the opportunity to Share.  I explained that our church is working with other organizations to furnish apartments for these Afghan refugees.  I shared with her that we were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thanked her for her donation.  The table ended up going with the apartment furnished by the Fairfield Ward.  Later, I followed up with her to let her know the table had been successfully delivered to a family in need.

I shared this experience because my desire to love and service my neighbor, the Afghan refugees, led to an opportunity to obtain a table and chairs.  When picking up the table from this nice lady wanting to donate, I was able to share the efforts of our church to help those in need.  This was done in a normal and natural way.  I don’t know if anything will come from this experience, but I was able to show love and share a gospel principle through this experience. And, she actually contacted me again recently to see if she could donate a set of dishes to the cause.

How can you better serve those in need in our community?

Sincerely,

Impromptu Refugee Service Coordinator
